A customer offered us 50 cents on the dollar as an alternative to filing
for bankruptcy protection. Any comments?
Answer: I suggest making
a counteroffer. For example, ask for 75% as an alternative to placing
the account for collection. It costs next to nothing to do so, and often
the debtor company management establishes a specific settlement range
and will agree to any amount negotiated in that dollar range.
A note of caution: A customer may refuse to agree to the counter offer.
In this scenario, accepting 50 cents on the dollar may be your "best
bet" to recover a portion of the outstanding debt.
