We are starting to do business with the U.S. Army. One hears horror stories. Any suggestions on how to accelerate the learning curve - and avoid landmines?

Answer: Yes. Here are some quick tips:

  • Read and understand your contract.
  • If you have questions, contact the contracting officer.
  • Don't sign the contract unless your company is sure it can perform.
  • Don't short ship without specific authorization to do so.
  • Try to attend one of the 'How To Do Business With Us' programs sponsored by and taught by government employees.
  • Make sure everyone involved with your government contract work understands the exacting nature of doing business with the government.
  • Expect payment delays. There is a long learning curve before vendors become familiar with how to do business with federal government departments and agencies.
  • Read and understand the Federal Acquisition Regulations - and any modification of the FAR that might apply to your contract or the agency you have contracted with.

Good luck!
